A Case History - Prospective sale or purchase

Outside experts confirm suspicions

Offered a landscape oil painting by a notable 19th-century European artist, a longtime client of Appraisal Associates sought advice on the authenticity of the artwork as well as its market value. Although the woman had well-developed connoisseurship skills, she believed the high six-figure asking price warranted due diligence. She retained Appraisal Associates for the job.

After extensive core research, Appraisal Associates believed that the piece was problematic in several ways, enough to cause concern. Turning to two outside experts in the artist’s work, our appraisers confirmed suspicions regarding the painting’s authenticity. The resulting report provided the client with enough information to make a fully informed decision on the prospective purchase, which was declined.
