Unbiased valuation eliminates impasse
During a divorce proceeding, disagreements over the value of contemporary paintings, sculpture, and high-end reproduction furniture included in a marital home inflamed an already difficult matter and prevented it from moving forward. One of the parties approached Appraisal Associates to estimate the fair market value of the items in the household, hoping an unbiased valuation would eliminate the impasse. In an effort to establish and maintain our arm’s-length independence in the appraisal, we suggested both parties retain our firm to perform the valuation.
With the co-operation of both parties, the appraisal report was completed. By acting as advocates for our own value conclusion rather than one of the parties involved in the divorce, we effectively satisfied both the husband and wife with our appraisal report and eliminated an otherwise contentious issue.
