A Case History

Unrecognized value in collection

Referred to a longtime client by an insurance broker, Appraisal Associates was engaged to value a collection of European paintings dating to the 17th and 18th centuries for insurance coverage. During an inspection of the paintings, our appraiser noticed a small still life painting not included in the list of scheduled artworks. Noting its high quality, the appraiser suggested it should be researched and included in the appraisal, and the client agreed.

When the final appraisal report was issued, both client and insurance broker were relieved our appraiser had suggested the inclusion of the painting. The superb still life was by an important 17th-century Dutch painter and came in with a six-figure replacement value.
